As far as dressing for Sydney is concerned, casual wear is generally the way to go. You could even push it as far as attending the theatre in jeans, although most locals will take this opportunity to dress up.
Some clubs have a dress code for general entry, which will exclude clothing items such as open shoes, jeans and collarless shirts. Some also require that gentlemen wear a jacket and tie to enter formal dining areas.
When walking in the national parks and reserves, remember to wear comfortable shoes, and consider wearing long-sleeved clothing and insect repellent.
