Gay and Lesbian Night Spots
Home of the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, Sydney has a thriving and diverse gay scene.
Oxford Street is the centre of the largest gay scene in the Southern Hemisphere. There are plenty of great places to eat, drink and dance the night away in surrounding Darlinghurst. Neighbouring Surry Hills, Paddington and Erskineville offer yet more options.
The chic party crowd gravitates towards harbourside Potts Point and Elizabeth Bay. North Bondi and Tamarama (or 'Glamarama' as it is affectionately known) Beaches are popular with the very well-heeled, and it's not hard to see why.
Further west, funky Newtown rivals Darlinghurst as Sydney's gay capital. With miles of fantastic bars and restaurants, it's a must visit. Nearby Leichhardt also offers an extensive range of eateries and pubs, and has long been popular amongst the lesbian community.
Take your pick from four venues, including the Cabaret Room, Cellar Bar, Public Bar and Priscilla Lounge. Dance downstairs to raging house until late.
Relax in the upstairs lounge, play a game of pool, and dance to the best beats from top DJs. The Newtown also hosts fabulous sequined drag acts, like Portia Turbo and Pru Crimson.
The Slip Inn offers excellent drinks and friendly, efficient service. Enjoy funky Brazilian music on Thursday nights. The lovely, leafy outdoor space overlooks Darling Harbour and is a prime location for celebrity-spotting.
Grab a patio table on the square and soak up the buzzing street atmosphere. The Oxford's vibrant corner location is hard to beat.
The sleek, industrial main bar is popular amongst gay patrons. Try a cocktail in the opulent Kings Lounge next door. Or dance to the latest sounds in the dazzling Gilligan's nightclub amidst a bohemian crowd.
Upstairs, The Supper Club hosts live entertainment in a lush, intimate space bursting with old world elegance. The luxurius Polo Lounge is sophisticated and timeless, with an ambience reminiscent of Mayfair's gentlemen's clubs. Enjoy a cocktail on one of the Chesterfield sofas and admire the views across the city.
